Look for a conversation
before a decision.

A video visit, phone call or online exchange used for care is telehealth. Begin with what you want help with, even if you arrived with a drug name in mind.

What makes an online visit a real evaluation?

Why this matters

Can the doctor or other medical professional treating you ask about your health and use your answers to decide what care fits?

A form can start a visit; it cannot answer every question

Check the state and the person

As of September 2026, telehealth doctors need a licence or other permission for the state in which their patient is physically located during the visit.

State rules differ on how an online relationship and prescription can begin.

A state medical board’s public records can show the doctor’s licence status today and any action the board has taken against them.

That can include formal charges or penalties; what the board makes public varies by state.

Ask for the person’s full name, medical role and licence number. If they rely on another permission to practise, ask what it is and which state board can confirm it.

Expect room for more questions

Medical-board guidance, as of September 2026, rejects choosing treatment from a menu without a proper assessment.

The guidance also says patients should be able to ask their treating professional more questions.

The Federation of State Medical Boards issued that guidance; enforceable rules are set by each state.

A useful opening is to describe your goal in your own words. Include what has changed, when you noticed it and what else you take.

  • How will you decide whether this is a good fit for my goal?
  • Could another condition explain what I am feeling?
  • What would make you recommend an in-person visit instead?

A screen has limits

Medical-board guidance says that needed tests or an examination must be arranged, completed or handled through a referral.

A referral means being sent to another medical professional or service for part of the visit or tests. Ask who arranges it and who brings the results back into the plan.
